According to 1 Thessalonians 5:23 every believer is a three-part being made up of a spirit, soul, and body. Understanding what this means is very important to understanding who you are, and how God relates to you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW CREATION; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
The moment you believed in Jesus as your Savior, you were instantly made new. You were given a new spirit. This is your New Man, or New Nature. Your born again spirit (John 3:6-7) was created in true righteousness and holiness, according to Ephesians 4:24. God relates to you Spirit to Spirit, and therefore He see’s you as perfect forever, righteous, and holy. Sin can not penetrate your born again Spirit. (Eph 1:13) So even though you still sin, you ARE holy because of your new nature/new man/spirit. You do NOT have to try to earn your righteousness, because you are truly righteous!
Another amazing thing happened the moment you believed. Ephesians 1:13 says, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
When you heard the gospel, and believed in Jesus, you were given a new spirit, AND you were also sealed with the Holy Spirit. Nothing can penetrate that seal. The Holy Spirit is our comforter and helper (John 14:16). He guides us (John 16:13), intercedes for us (Romans 8:26), reminds us of our righteousness (John 16:10), gives us power and boldness (2 Tim 1:7), and the list goes on and on. 1 Corinthians 3:16 tells us that the Holy Spirit is in us. He is a part of us. I like to think of the Holy Spirit as the very heartbeat of our spirit, giving us life (2 Cor 3:6, 1 Pet 3:18).
Many new believers wonder why don’t they feel like a new creation? Or they wonder why they are still struggling with sin. The answer is simple. It is because you received a new spirit, not a new soul or a new body.
Your soul is made of your mind, will, and emotions. So when you became a new creation, it wasn’t in the realm of your soul. Therefore, your old thought patterns, the lies the enemy has convinced you are true, memories from your past, and everything else that existed in your soul before salvation, is still there afterward.
Your body is the physical part of you. It is in your body that you will either walk from your soul (your emotions, desires, thoughts) or from your spirit.
Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Learning to walk from the Spirit, rather than our soul, comes from renewing the mind. The Bible has much to say about who we are and as we wash ourselves with the Word, we begin to believe what it says about us. We are more than conquerors. We are dead to sin and alive to Christ. We have God’s power and authority. We are holy and perfect. We have peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, etc…. We already have everything we need in the fullest measure in our Spirit. As we renew our minds, we learn to access that and walk in it, because after all…. it is who we ARE!
